Overview of the Hoffman Tables Program

All students by the time they finish primary school should know their Tables well. The Hoffman Tables Program gives students the opportunity to improve their mastery of the basic tables for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. For every example the student answers, the Program indicates whether the response is right or wrong. If a student gives three consecutive wrong responses to a question, then the Program directs the student to the Demonstration Module. This module presents the student with a diagrammatic explanation of how the correct result is obtained. At any stage a student can use the EXIT button to return to the home screen. At any stage a student can use the START button to return to the Start screen. Many of the questions are relatively simple, but it is important that the student experiences the satisfaction and reinforcement from answering correctly these simple questions. There are two levels of difficulty within the Practice module of the Program:
  1. Level 1 (Normal) provides practice with the range of number facts listed below:
    • Addition: From 0 + 0 to 9 + 9, e.g. 7 + 9 = 16
    • Subtraction: From 0 - 0 to 18 - 9, e.g. 16 - 9 = 7
    • Multiplication: From 1 × 1 to 9 × 9, e.g. 7 × 6 = 42
    • Division: From 1 ÷ 1 to 81 ÷ 9, e.g. 42 ÷ 6 = 7
The Demonstration Module is linked to Level 1.
  2. Level 2 (Hard) is more difficult. It provides practice with the following range of number facts:
    • Addition: From 0 + 0 to 19 + 19, e.g. 7 + 19 = 26
    • Subtraction: From 0 - 0 to 38 - 19, e.g. 26 - 7 = 19
    • Multiplication: From 1 × 1 to 19 × 19, e.g. 7 × 16 = 112
    • Division: From 1 ÷ 1 to 361 ÷ 19, e.g. 112 ÷ 7 = 16
Students should not attempt Level 2 unless they already have high levels of mastery at Level 1. At any stage a student can use the EXIT button to return to the home screen. For a fuller description of the Program click on the Fuller Description button below.
